Koek

An international platform for South African thrillers has never been introduced to a more imaginative and exciting show than Koek, where ‘everyone wants a stukkie’, thanks to its talented cast and creative team.

As housewife Christelle Smit of Cape Town uncovers proof that her husband is involved with a stripper called Candi Floss, her quest for answers leads her to a realm that is diametrically opposed to the suburban paradise she is familiar with.

In the first episode, this comedic-noir series, which draws inspiration from David Lynch’s work as well as films like, Saw and Fargo, expertly establishes the wicked predicament that a distraught suburban housewife faces when her naive plan to kidnap her husband’s alleged mistress goes catastrophically wrong.

Filmmaker Johannes Pieter Nel (Magda Louw) and writer Christiaan Olwagen (KanarieRecipes for Love & Murder) collaborate on this crime comedy. Olwagen has won both the SAFTA and the Silwerskerm awards for his work as a show-runner, his previous series, Recipes for Love and Murder, has now sold to more than 90 countries, and whose film Kanarie, was nominated for a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Film – Limited Release.

Christelle, played by Cindy Swanepoel (who won SAFTA and Silwerskerm awards last year for her role as Annelize in Binnelanders), is soon in debt to the brandy-drinking, cigar-smoking, leopard-print-loving, kidney-stealing mob boss played by Sandra Prinsloo, a cinematic legend.

Koek lands on Showmax on 29 February 2024, with new episodes every Thursday until 2 May 2024.
